Can you buy a money order with a credit card?
Well, yes, you can buy a money order using a credit card, as well as with debit cards, check and bank transfers. However, unless using credit is your only option, and sending money is really necessary, we do not recommend it. This is because a lot of credit card companies will mostly consider buying a money order to be equivalent to a cash advance. Therefore, this kind of transaction is set to trigger a hefty fee as well as immediate accrual of a high-interest rate by credit card company. Credit Card issuers do not want their customers to be able to bypass cash advance fees and the revenue they provide, so they treat buying money orders on credit as cash advance.
Not all Locations Accept Credit Cards for Money Orders
If you were planning to use Walmart, Moneygram, USPS and Moneytree then you need to know that they do not accept credit card payments for a money order. However, you could buy your money order with your credit card at the following locations:
- 7 Eleven- charges $1 to $5 depending on the amount of the money order.
- Western Union charges you $11.95 for every $100 in money order amount that is purchased with a credit card. The charges will vary based on the money order amount.
As you can see most of the locations that will allow you to use credit card to buy money order charge additional fees because you are using a credit card. In addition your credit card company will charge you a fee and higher interest rate on your money order purchase. So next time you are asking your self can you buy a money order with a credit card you need to first ask your self do i really want to pay all these extra fees to buy this money order with my credit card. We recommend that you only buy money orders with credit card if you absolutely have no other options. A good way to avoid buying a money order with a credit card is to have one of your friends or family members use your credit card to buy their groceries, gas, or other household items and giving you cash for that purchase so that you can use it to pay for your money order. Yes it may be embarrassing to ask your friends and family for this favor but it is much better then paying all these additional fees.
